Ashtanga Yoga for Everybody
Limited Capacity seats available

This class will focus on the aspects of Ashtanga Yoga that are appropriate for everybody. While many people may not realize it, the popular style of yoga today known as vinyasa yoga has its roots in Ashtanga yoga. This class will teach, in detail, both Suryanamaskar A&B which are found in almost every modern day vinyasa class on the planet. We will also cover, in detail, the standing poses of the series which help to open the hips and the hamstrings safely. One of the most important things in yoga asanas(the postures) is to open your hips safely without breaking your knees. Standing poses do this brilliantly and intelligently. There will be opportunity to ask questions in this class as well. This class is suitable for all levels of yogis.
Class time devoted to lecture: 5-10 minutes

Kula Flow: Sweetened with Honey
Limited Capacity filling up

Many people are too type-A to take a true restorative class. So this is the Kula solution. As one student put it, ‘You kick my ass for half the class and then kiss it for the rest." (Sanskrit translation please?) Honey Flow - the most delicious (and stealthily challenging) of Kula style classes. A one hour serving of sticky, dripping Kula Flow, lathered with 20 minutes of yin yoga, a drizzle of restorative asana, and a big savasana cherry on top. Serve it up with some live music and… YUM. (This class is open to all levels, but will be challenging for new practitioners and is inappropriate for those working with an acute injury or physical limitation.)

3 Keys to a Lifelong Vinyasa Practice
Limited Capacity seats available

Flow style yoga can make you feel amazing, but you can also develop some pretty gnarly injuries. This class focuses on 3 vinyasa ‘hot spots’, places that new (and longtime) students often experience pain: The wrists, shoulders and lower back. For the first half of class, we will workshop key alignment points for some classic postures which compromise these parts of the body. Then we will put these principles into practice with a simple vinyasa sequence. The foundation of a yoga practice is Ahimsa, or ‘do no harm’ - to others AND to your own body. Flow style yoga shouldn’t just be for the young and strong, but rather for dedicated practitioners - who want to be able to move intelligently for life. (This class is designed for beginners, all students who want to revisit the foundation of their practice, and teachers seeking tools for teaching basics classes.)

Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series
Limited Capacity seats available

This class is the traditional Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. He called Ashtanga Yoga a "hatha Yoga breathing system" and it is a sequence with a strong focus on forward bending postures meant to prepare and strengthen the body and develop the profound breathing practice known as Ujayyi pranayama. Ashtanga yoga is known for its emphasis on three main aspects: the breath, Drishtis- focused gazing points, and the bandhas which are internal energetic "locks" used to contain and direct energy within the body. The pace of this class is brisk to create heat in the body. Modifications for some poses will be taught as needed to help avoid injury in the practice. This class is suitable for those students already familiar with Ashtanga yoga as well as those in good physical shape with a sense of curiosity about the practice.

The Art of Stillness - Yin Yoga
Limited Capacity seats available

In this class, we will explore the quiet self reflective practice of the yin postures. By cultivating yin energy, we create balance on the path of self-transformation by letting go, and surrendering to whatever is holding us back...enhancing self-awareness, through the stillness of body and mind. Focusing on long-held, mostly seated postures, combined with one pointed concentration and focus on the breath, this practice will encourage us to dive deep into the body, via the connective tissue, and even deeper into the mind, via mindfulness, with an attitude of compassionate acceptance and surrender, awakening the more yin aspects of ourselves. Waking up to more presence in the mind, and awareness of the body, while deepening our connection to source through the breath. Through the art of stillness we are reminded of who and what we truly are, while letting go of what we are not.

Vinyasa Yoga is the practice of physical and spiritual development, the art and science of combining the elements of Yoga in a sequence that makes an effective and safe practice. When we use the body, breath and mind in a deliberate manner, an integrated, unified state of harmony and attention is achieved. Patanjali realized that it takes work to become grounded in these ways of being and they need to be the roots and foundation of our yoga practice. The Yamas and Niyamas are our ways of being; our attitudes. In this class, Ryan will introduce the "Yogi Code" and explain how practicing these ancient, living truths can help us in our everyday lives. Eventually we realize we are practicing in every moment.

This session will explore the anatomy, kinesiology and practice of fundamental and intermediate backbending postures. The first 45 minutes is dedicated to Yogamazé’s signature approach to deconstructing poses and analyzing what is occurring at the anatomical level; joints, muscular actions, difficulties and common misalignments. The remainder of the session (2+ hours) is asana based to embody the "theory" in an intermediate/advanced backbend workshop. This session focuses on postures that extend the hips and spine, opening the front chain of the body and contracting the back. Through an in depth exploration of the balance of strength and mobility required in each body region, we will work intelligently to move safely through the fundamental backbends into intermediate backbends: Urdhva Dhanurasana, Laghu Vajrasana, Kapotasana, Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana. Bring a notebook, yoga props (two blocks, a blanket and a strap) and come ready to learn, work hard and have fun.

If those three words were how you described your yoga practice, what would it look like? If your instructor said, warrior 1 but make it juicy, what does that feel like? If your body moved based on feeling, what would you move like? Lets get rid of the notion of what we should look like and be more mindful of what we feel like. This practice will be sensual, and mindful to the need of our own bodies. We will share a space that encompasses a system of supporting one another in a safe environment at which to move in a way that feels juicy. Followed by a yummy Savasana.

Good Morning Yin Yoga...A beautiful way to start the day. Open up first thing in the morning, receiving the full benefits of the yin postures while the mind and body, particularly the muscles, are still cool and calm. Physically, the connective tissue respond better to the longer holds of the yin practice first thing in the morning, before the muscles have had a chance to warm up. Allowing us to go even deeper into the body focusing on the bones, joints, ligaments, and fascia. Releasing any tension and tightness physically, so that we can mentally soften into the moment with more grace and ease. Cultivating a meditative mind that allows us to stay grounded, centered, and calm, throughout our day.

Ashtanga Standing Poses: From The Ground Up!
Limited Capacity seats available

Standing poses are some of the most effective, safe postures in yoga to open your legs and hips. They also cultivate stability and stamina which are crucial in maintaining your asana practice. We will practice Suryanamaskar A& B to warm up the body and establish our breath, bandhas, and drishtis. Then we will practice the standing poses, staying longer than the traditional 5-8 breaths held in the series. These longer holds will give us time to explore the details or "research" the intricacies of the poses with an emphasis on Ahimsa, which is non harming. It is so important to realize that the standing poses are what will help us achieve the more challenging poses on the floor in the body of both the Primary and the Second series of Ashtanga yoga. A long satisfying Savasana will complete the class. This class is suitable for all levels of students.

Wake Up and Smell the Sweet Yin
Limited Capacity seats available

Demystifying The Subtleties of Ashtanga Yoga
Limited Capacity seats available

In Ashtanga Yoga there is a holy trinity that supports the internal experience. Sri K Pattabhi Jois taught me that the trinity is comprised of Ujayyi breathing, the Drishtis and the Bandhas. When practiced together they create an environment that is supportive for deep meditative expression through the physical asana practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Uyajji pranayama means "victorious breathing"and this class will teach you not only how to do it, but will share tools to help you move deeper into the breath and stay with it longer. The Bandhas are incredible in containing and sustaining energy . Using Virasana we will explore the bandhas from a unique perspective. The third aspect of Ashtanga is Drishti which literally means to see. The drishtis help you focus and be less distracted in the practice. This will be an educational class with opportunities for questions and create healthy dialogue about Ashtanga Yoga.
