Ashtanga Yoga for Everybody
Limited Capacity seats available

This class will focus on the aspects of Ashtanga Yoga that are appropriate for everybody. While many people may not realize it, the popular style of yoga today known as vinyasa yoga has its roots in Ashtanga yoga. This class will teach, in detail, both Suryanamaskar A&B which are found in almost every modern day vinyasa class on the planet. We will also cover, in detail, the standing poses of the series which help to open the hips and the hamstrings safely. One of the most important things in yoga asanas(the postures) is to open your hips safely without breaking your knees. Standing poses do this brilliantly and intelligently. There will be opportunity to ask questions in this class as well. This class is suitable for all levels of yogis.
Class time devoted to lecture: 5-10 minutes

Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series
Limited Capacity seats available

This class is the traditional Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. He called Ashtanga Yoga a "hatha Yoga breathing system" and it is a sequence with a strong focus on forward bending postures meant to prepare and strengthen the body and develop the profound breathing practice known as Ujayyi pranayama. Ashtanga yoga is known for its emphasis on three main aspects: the breath, Drishtis- focused gazing points, and the bandhas which are internal energetic "locks" used to contain and direct energy within the body. The pace of this class is brisk to create heat in the body. Modifications for some poses will be taught as needed to help avoid injury in the practice. This class is suitable for those students already familiar with Ashtanga yoga as well as those in good physical shape with a sense of curiosity about the practice.
Class time devoted to lecture: Less than 5 minutes

Ashtanga Yoga- An Introduction to the Second Series
Limited Capacity seats available

The second series of Ashtanga Yoga is called Nadi Shodhana. The Nadis are the subtle body’s electrical wiring. This series both strengthens and detoxifies the nervous system through a sequence of backbending postures and hip openers. This class will be an introduction to the second series and will include both Suryanamaskar A&B and the traditional second series standing pose sequence. From there we will explore the beginning of the second series including all of the backbends with some non traditional poses to help open the spine to prepare for the deeper backbends. We will finish with the traditional Ashtanga Yoga finishing poses. The pace will be brisk. The traditional emphasis on breath, bandha, and drishti will be part of the practice as well. Students who have completed the primary series are welcome as well as curious students who are strong and have no major injuries.
Class time devoted to lecture: Less than 5 minutes

Ashtanga Standing Poses: From The Ground Up!
Limited Capacity seats available

Standing poses are some of the most effective, safe postures in yoga to open your legs and hips. They also cultivate stability and stamina which are crucial in maintaining your asana practice. We will practice Suryanamaskar A& B to warm up the body and establish our breath, bandhas, and drishtis. Then we will practice the standing poses, staying longer than the traditional 5-8 breaths held in the series. These longer holds will give us time to explore the details or "research" the intricacies of the poses with an emphasis on Ahimsa, which is non harming. It is so important to realize that the standing poses are what will help us achieve the more challenging poses on the floor in the body of both the Primary and the Second series of Ashtanga yoga. A long satisfying Savasana will complete the class. This class is suitable for all levels of students.

Demystifying The Subtleties of Ashtanga Yoga
Limited Capacity seats available

In Ashtanga Yoga there is a holy trinity that supports the internal experience. Sri K Pattabhi Jois taught me that the trinity is comprised of Ujayyi breathing, the Drishtis and the Bandhas. When practiced together they create an environment that is supportive for deep meditative expression through the physical asana practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Uyajji pranayama means "victorious breathing"and this class will teach you not only how to do it, but will share tools to help you move deeper into the breath and stay with it longer. The Bandhas are incredible in containing and sustaining energy . Using Virasana we will explore the bandhas from a unique perspective. The third aspect of Ashtanga is Drishti which literally means to see. The drishtis help you focus and be less distracted in the practice. This will be an educational class with opportunities for questions and create healthy dialogue about Ashtanga Yoga.
Class time devoted to lecture: 31-45 minutes
